Is pointing in dogs an entirely instinctive behavior or may it have been somewhat trained to some extent as dogs have been selectively bred through the years? Interestingly, even if your dog isn't a pointing breed, you may occasionally stumble on him "pointing" by default when he spots an animal. This behavior is reminiscent of the days when dogs were hunting for a living and oriented towards prey animal before making the final pounce.
