Did you know? The bullmastiff was once nicknamed the "gamekeeper's night dog". A good gamekeeper had to pay a lot of attention to his surroundings to keep poachers out of large pieces of land. The ideal bullmastiff back then was equipped with a brindle coat so to camouflage and hide in the dark out of sight. His job was to hold on to the poachers until the gamekeeper arrived. Once there was no longer a need for this task, the brindle coat was no longer much needed and the fawn coat with black markings became popular.
