Did you know? German shepherds are under scrutiny by the Kennel Club Breed Watch system. The reason for this is the fact that as of lately unscrupulous breeders are breeding these dogs without keeping the health and temperament of this breed in mind.
Main issues seen in this breed are inflammation of the ear canal, osteoarthritis, diarrhea, and aggression. Particularly, there is concern about this breed's predisposition to musculoskeletal disorders and the inability to stand.
According to Dan O' Neill, the lead author from the Royal Veterinary College, German shepherds have been reported to have the second highest number of health disorders that are exacerbated by breeding traits.
In particular, issues seem to arise from the practice of breeding for excessive angulation of the back knee and leg joints causing lower hindquarters or a sloping back. On top of this, another main issue is a propensity for nervous temperaments.
